Russel Caflisch is an American mathematician. == Biography == Russel Caflisch is a Professor in the Mathematics Department at UCLA, where he also holds a joint appointment in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He received his bachelor's degree from Michigan State University in 1975. He earned a master's degree and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University. His dissertation was titled "The Fluid Dynamic Limit and Shocks for a Model Boltzmann Equation." He has also held faculty positions at Stanford and NYU. He is currently the director of the Institute for Pure & Applied Mathematics (IPAM). 〔 〕 He was a founding member of California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI).
